Jess was groggy. Her head hurt, her back was on fire and that wasn’t even nearly as painful as the daggers slicing their way through the bones in her leg. She groaned as she felt a hand place a contraption in her palm.

“It’s a morphine drip. Just press the button if you’re in pain and it will ease up a little.” The voice seemed far off in the fog of Jess’s head. If she didn’t know any better, the melodic sound was almost reminiscent of Amelia. But that couldn’t be right. Amelia was thousands of miles away, and she was sure that the last thing Amelia would be thinking of right now was Jess, sitting in a hospital.

Hospital. The details started to make themselves known. The fog started to clear slightly as she felt the stab of pain in her knee. She had knee surgery. She had been told that the scar tissue could be removed and that she might be able to dance. And the only reason why she was here was because of…

“Amelia?” Her voice was hoarse and she started to cough right away. Amelia came to her side with a plastic cup of water and held it to her chapped lips. The warm water felt scratchy against her throat as she drank gingerly. Amelia took the cup away as Jess’s eyes finally cleared. For a moment, she wondered if she were dreaming. Amelia looked so stunningly beautiful. Even with her hair a mess and the dark rings under her eyes. Jess shook her head as if to get rid of those thoughts. There was no place for them inside this room.

“Hey. How are you feeling?” Amelia’s voice was soft and for a moment Jess felt as though she was about to cry. She wanted Amelia to wrap her in an embrace. She didn’t even need it to be romantic – she just needed the comfort of knowing that everything would be alright.

“You’re a dick.” And that’s when Jess realized she wasn’t alone in the room with Amelia. Julian came into focus. His fine features pinched in annoyance and worry.

“I’m fine, thank you Julian. And how are you?” Julian huffed loudly as he squeezed Jess’s shoulder.

“I said that out of love.” Julian smiled slightly waiting for Jess to respond. When she didn’t Julian repeated Amelia’s question. “How are you feeling?”

Jess groaned as she tried to sit more upright. She felt Amelia’s hands on her shoulders instantly. She laid back down, trying to protest, but felt the bed moving her body upright. She smiled a thanks to Amelia who put down the remote and focused in on the hazel eyes.

“I’m good. Doesn’t hurt a bit.” Jess grimaced as she attempted to move the bottom half of her. She heard Amelia tsk and Julian just chuckled.

“You’re such a hard ass. You just had major surgery, Jess. It’s okay to say you’re in pain.” Jess was going to retort, saying that Julian was the only pain in this room but thought better of it.
